The Bookcase is pleased to welcome Terry Hitchcock, author of A Father's Odyssey, to our store at 7:00 on Thursday, March 4. Mr. Hitchcock will be on hand to read from, discuss, and sign copies of his book. In 1996, at the age of 57, Terry Hitchcock ran the equivalent of 75 consecutive marathons in 75 consecutive days. He travelled over 2,000 miles to bring awareness to the financial and emotional hardships faced by single parents and their children -- everyday heroes who run quiet, yet extraordinary, daily marathons. This is his story. | ||

The Bookcase is pleased to welcome retired Wayzata High School English teacher Philip A. Fraser to our store on Sunday, March 7 at 2:00. Mr. Fraser recently published his memoir, and will be on hand that day to do a short reading, answer questions, and sign copies of the book. As a member of what's known as the greatest generation, Philip A. Fraser served in World War II for more than three years. After rigorous training in Australia, his Army unit, the 32nd Infantry Division, moved into combat in New Guinea, where Fraser worked as a radio relay. When his service ended in 1945, Fraser returned to his home state of Wisconsin. Here he met his wife Marion and attended college, studying English education. A dedicated soldier, teacher, and family man, Phil Fraser shares the laughs and lessons of his life. | ||

The Bookcase Book Club will meet on Tuesday, March 9 at 1:00 and 7:00 p.m. to discuss Muriel Barbery's novel The Elegance of the Hedgehog. Renee Michel is the dumpy, nondescript, 54-year-old concierge of a small and exclusive Paris apartment building. Paloma Josse also lives in the building. Acutely intelligent, introspective and philosophical, this 12-year-old views the world as absurd and records her observations about it in her journal. These two characters provide the double narrative of The Elegance of the Hedgehog, and you will fall in love with both. Tender and satirical in its overall tone, yet most absorbing because of its reflections on the nature of beauty and art, the meaning of life and death, the intelligent Muriel Barbery has served readers well by giving us the gently satirical, exceptionally winning and inevitably bittersweet Elegance of the Hedgehog. Thejourney began in 1901 and ended in 2007. The journal ofeighteen-year-old Minnie Rose Morgan was retraced by her granddaughterSally and great-great-granddaughter Amanda. It started with them takinga four day covered wagon trek in Nebraska. With the temperature overone hundred degrees and lots of dust, the appreciated what "got up donemorning work" really meant. Retracing Minnie's journal was full ofsurprises as they wondered what landmarks, if any, still survived afterone hundred years. | ||
